Chapter 27

Ok--we're finished!!! Answer the questions on page 265. (1) What does the story signify? What is Mansfield saying in the story? What do you see as its meaning? AND (2) What does it signify? What elements does Mansfield employ to cause the story to signify whatever it signifies? What elements, in other words, cause it to mean the things you take it to mean?

  1. (1) I think the story signifies that you don't know what its like or what is really important until you've see the other side of life. I think Mansfield is saying that we worry about such little things such as planning a party when just right next door there is someone with a dead relative, and your worried over something insignificant. (2) It signifies by Mansfield creating the story in the beginning to being all about the party and how the family was furiously trying to get everything in line and then the story shifts to Laura going over to the house and seeing the dead man and the family isn't even worried, but more at peace. I think the realization of Laura and saying that seeing the dead man was beautiful makes me think that Mansfield wanted the reader to quit worrying about small things because there is always someone who is far worse off than you.
