Chapter 8

I love fairy tales! And how cool is it that he mentions Paducah!!

So, can you think of any stories you've heard that remind you of fairy tales? Anything with an evil stepparent? A "prince" who rescues a fair maiden? A jealous "queen"? I can't help but be reminded of Harry Potter. He has horrible stepparents, and although a handsome prince doesn't come to his resucue--a big, hairy, semi-wizard does.

I also think about when he's at school, it's like Cinderella at teh ball--all of the magic works, At midnight/summer break, it's back to his normal, dreary life.

Your turn. Think of a short story or novel that reminds you in some way of a fairy tale. Explain why.

  1. The book i think of immediately is The Last Song. Ronnie doesnt really have an "evil" step parent or anything, she is just tormented by the fact that her family was been ripped apart and her dad relocated thousands of miles away. She does, however, has a prince charming. His name is Will and when he walks into her life, she changes for the better.

  2. A novel that reminds me of a fairy tale is called Homecoming. Its about theses four young children who are abandoned by their mom and have to find their way back home all by themselves. In a way it reminds me of Hansel and Grettle and how their dad pretty much abandoned them and they had to find their way back home.

  3. In Eragon the teenage boy, Eragon, finds a dragon egg and it hatches and bonds to him. After it hatches horrible things like the evil king's assassins come looking for him and end up killing his Uncle by burning their home. Just when things seem to be unbearable a man named Brom comes and rescues the boy and starts to train him. Brom was Eragon's knight in shining armor, he rescued him and took him away from all the harmful things. Not only does that remind me of a fairy tale but just the genera setting of the Eragon series reminds me of a fairy tale with dragons and knights, etc.

  4. One book that comes to mind is A Cinderella Story. Obviously this book is related to the fairy tale of Cinderella. The young girl lost her father and is stuck with the stepmother just like the fairy tale. She also has to fight her step sisters and find her "prince" at the ball (high school dance). This book is related to the fairy tale Cinderella for obvious reasons, keeping the same story and ending. Another give away is the title.

  5. The movie and book "The Blind Side" reminds me of a fairy tale even though it is a true story. It starts out as Michael is a poor kid who has nothing until he is taken in by a wealthy family, who encourages him to play football. Of course he has his troubles and mishaps. Throughout the story the family learns to accept Michael and welcome him into their life. In the end he gets a scholarship to play with Ole' Miss. So it ends on a good note and everybody is happy. Very much fairy tale material.

  6. One book that reminds me of a fairy tale is the book I just finished, Liar. In the story she claims that she is part wolf, only changing when she forgets to take her "pill." She claims that in the summer she gets to go to her grandparents farm and spends the summer freely changing into a wolf without any problems, and then when it's time for school to start and she has to move back to the city, it's back to her miserable life, basically being invisible to everyone around her. The only person that really saves her is her biology teacher, Yayeko Shoji.

  7. I know i have used this for like everything, but the first movie i thought of was Shreck. He has the fight in the big rink just like all the strong men do in the fairy tales and then he has his "journey" to rescue the princess. His journey reminds me of Sleeping Beauty because he even has encounters with a dragon.

  8. A book that reminds me of a fairytale is the one i am reading right now. Brittany, who is living in the North side of town where all the rich and respectable people live, is not as perfect as she puts on. Her home life consists of a critical mother, a father who is hardly around, and an older mentally handicapped sister, who her parents are always trying to send away. She meets Alex, who is from the South part of town and someone that she "shouldnt" hang around with. Despite their social status Alex is able to see through the wall she puts up and helps her through her home life like no one else could. There are two jealous characters in this book. Carmen, Alex's ex girlfriend, and Colin, Brittany's boyfriend.

  9. Ok I know the chapter listed this but besides Harry Potter the only other series (besides twilight) that I've read was the Chronicles of Narnia. This is like a Fairy tale because the four kids enter Narnia and save the Kingdom. They are later crowned. Although there wasn't a prince, I think the Lion who comes to help them can represent that figure. They save Narnia from the Queen. This almost reminds me of Alice and Wonderland if you think about it. The kids represent Alice while the queen in Narnia is parallel to the queen in Alice and Wonderland because they both try to rule their kingdom. But in the end every is happ and Narnia is saved just like Wonderland was saved.

  10. The first movie that came to my mind is Monster in Law. Jennifer Lopez falls in love with a high class gentlemen. All goes well until she meets his mother. She tries to break them apart because of her jealousy of their love. The young man's mother would act as an "evil step mother" in a fairy tale.

  11. The fairy tale Shrek reminds me of many fairy tales. There are many characters from different fairy tales. Also in the first one Shrek has to go to a tower in the middle of a volcano that is guarded by a dragon to get a beautiful princess. At the end of the story the brave knight (Shrek) and the princess fall in love and live happily ever after.

  12. The one that randomly came to mind was the dreamworks movie How to Train your Dragon. In the movie Hicup is the boy who is put down by his dad and everyone else in his tribe until he finds and tames a dragon, who he was actually sent to kill, hence the knight vs. dragon thing. Hicup tames the dragon and eventually has to go and fight this giant monster/dragon thing, hence the knight and his steed vs. some big evil. After he defeats the monster he then gains respect from his tribe.

  13. This may sound extremely cliché but when I think of fairy tales I automatically think of the Disney classics, Beauty and the Beast to be exact. At the beginning of the movie Belle is just an average girl in a new town and everyone talks about how beautiful and innocent she is. But her life isn't that simple. Belle has to look after her father how is a famous inventor, and when he doesn't show up to a fair that he is scheduled to be at, Belle goes out looking for him. On her adventure she stumbles upon the castle that houses the Beast. She is taken prisoner and throughout the whole story Belle and the Beast become close and eventually fall in love.

  14. The first story that comes to my mind is the lighting thief. Percy jasckson is your normal everyday teenager. when all of a sudden he gets attacked by a demon from hades. he learns that hes a demi-god (half human half god ) and that his father is Poseidon god of the ocean. He is then set on a quest to help catch the thief who stole Zeus's lighting bolt. The randomness of this story reminds me Of your lowly stable boy who is heir to a king of some distant land sent off at birth and goes to retake his fathers thrown in a night in shining armor

  15. The book I'm reading now is kinda like a fairy tale. The main character, Alex Rider is the prince, the one saving the world and being heroic overcoming great difficulties to win though. The princess is Sabina Pleasure, she is the beautiful girl the main character winds up finding hope in and they like eachother, even if they don't realize it. The horrible step-parents are Alan blunt and Mrs. Jones, the head of the British MI6 the ones "forcing" alex to do the missions. The evil person is played by many people from assassins to crazy Russian generals.

  16. The first stories that came to my mind that reminded me of the fairy tales were the Harry Potter books. Like you said he does have some pretty mean step-parents but gets to escape them every year when School starts. Also in one book he is rescued by Ron and his family and lives with them.

  17. A book that reminds me of a fairy tail is called Freak Show (You're going to have to stick with me on this one, because this is one of those books that falls out of the norm.) This book is fairy-tale-eque to me, and it's really hard for me to label it with a specific fairy tale. So I'm going to say it's a cross between Cinderella and The Ugly Duckling (which I'm considering a fairy tale for today.)

The book is about Billy Bloom, a young drag queen that is forced to move to the deep south to live with his dad. He has to go to a local private school, which is filled with people that are just repulsed by his blatant homosexuality. He gets beat up and insulted at school. He develops a major crush on one of the most popular guys at school. He runs for prom queen, and predictably, he doesn't win. So all this bad stuff happens to him, and it really looks grim for poor Billy. But at the end of the book, he ends up with the guy he fell in love with.

It's one of the sweetest books I've ever read, in all honesty, and I think it's one of the most lifelike fairy tales.

  18. I automatically think of the disney fairy tales. My favorite one is Cinderella which everyone knows the storyline. There are many remakes of this, like Cinderella Story with Hillary Duff, and then theres another one with Seleana Gomez or whatever her name is. I thought about this for a while and a book that i really didnt realize that was a fairytale is indeed a fairytale, Twilight. Bella goes to live with her father, who treats her right but she finds her prince charming and its about her adventures along the way.

  19. The book I am reading now reminds me of a fairy tale in a way. The book is titled "Gil's all night fright" and one way it reminds me of a fairy tale is that one of the main characters named Earl goes off searching for a curse that someone has put on a graveyard. In doing so he sees the graveyards keeper being a girl who can be labeled here as a "Princess". The girl has not seen anyone for years and she forgets what it was like to feel. As her hands go through everything. But after he shows up she can touch him. This was a kind of get away for her as she can not ever leave the graveyard until someone else is buried in the graveyard.

  20. When i think of fairy tails i think more along the lines of older Disney stories. One that I personally love is Toy Story. Imagining that toys where real was a fun idea for me as a kid. I think that's what the Toy Story movie was about, letting your imagination run wild and seeing what you come up with.

  21. The series the House of Night the main character Zoey lives with her mean stepdad and finds out she is going to become a vampire and is taken to The House of Night (school) were she is basically set free from here family and thrown into crazy new adventures. It has a mixture of fairy tales here their is little pieces of Cinderella.

  22. Yes, I can think of lots of stories that are fairy tales. The list is enormous! Pretty much anything that has good versus evil in a series of unrealistic circumstances can be considered a fairy tale. An example of this is Lord of the Rings. It is the classic good versus evil scenario. It has a hero. It has monsters. It has villains. It has a girl to win over. Along with mythological characters like elves and wizards. It is the perfect fairy tale.

  23. I am currently reading a book called Rules of the Road. I think it reminds me of a fairy tale because it is about a girl who doesn't have much, and her dad is a drunk. Then a woman comes to offer her a lot more out of life, than anyone ever has. It just seems to good to be true for her. I think that is usually the basis of a fairy tale, is when something is just to good to be true.

  24. The first fairy tail that I thought of was Sleeping Beauty. Instead of living with her parents she lives with her three fairy-god-mothers (which treat her very well). She lives with them so that she can hide from the evil witch who has bewitched her to die on her sixteenth birthday. While she is living with her god-mothers she meets her true love (which she has no idea that this is the man she is arranged to marry). Near the end of the story the evil witch turns into a ferocious dragon and her true love slays the dragon and saves her from death.

  25. I think that almost every book has a little bit of a fairy take in it, there is usually a conflict and a hero and someone who helps. I read this book about a girl who was abused by her dad and her bestfriend ended up being her "knight in shining armor" it doesn't always have to be a guy. Her friend ends up saving her in the end by helping her run away from her dad.

  27. I have this Disney complex. I love Disney movies, undoubtedly. I'm more interested in what really happened though. After the honeymoon, all that. Fables, a series of comic books by Vertigo (branch of DC), is a good example of that. It's about all the Fables throughout time. However, to say /that/ reminded me of fairy tales? Well, that'd be too easy. So I'll use the Gemma Doyle Trilogy. Each girl is decidedly damaged in some way. The main character, Gemma (as you can guess) lives in India until she's 16, her mother dying on her birthday. With her mothers death, she learns something about herself that she had no idea about. She moves back to England, and a mysterious guardian is secretly assigned to her (he's her Prince Charming, an amazing lad). Circe is the evil stepmother-type figure. If you read the books, you'd understand. They're amazing though because they don't focus on one thing. On the girl being saved, the romance aspect, anything like that. They're about life. All of it. Not just one part. Traditionally, Little Red cut off the Big Bad Wolf's head. People just tend to forget that.
