OK--so this one I definitely see. I can think of many allusions to biblical events and characters--especially in poetry. Many of the sonnets we will read will have biblical allusions. Novels are no different. One of the Jodi Piccoult novels I read is about a little girl who can heal and perform miracles, and I loved The DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. If you haven't read them, they are centered upon the mystery of the bible and religion--and its political/financial power. (Both are supposed to be really great movies too.)
I think many of us forget that that although the Bible is religious in nature, it is also one of the most popular works of literature as well. It has poetry and stories people have read, studied, and loved for centuries. No wonder it is alluded to so often. Here's your task--identify at least one biblical allusion. You can talk about poetry, short stories, novels, or even movies. Also, comment on why you think the Bible is referenced so often.
I think the Bible is alluded to so much is because everybody knows what the Bible is, even if they don't believe in Christianity. An allusion to the Bible remember was a short story we read one day about a little boy who stole a pie a grocery store. After he ate it he started to feel guilty and he talks about all these different things he sees that alludes to the Bible. Things like his friend falling out of a tree which symbolized the devil's fall from the angels and when he crawled under his house he heard pipes gurgling that to him sounded like the voice of God.
ReplyDeleteThe Bible is alluded to so often because it is so well known. I've heard that to this day, it is still the best selling book ever. Whether you believe in what the Bible says or not, you know what stories are in it. An allusion to the Bible that i think of is the movies Bruce Almighty and Evan Almighty. In these movies it shows what it'd be like to be God and throughout the whole movie, you see a lot of biblical allusions.
ReplyDeleteThe Bible is referenced so often because everyone knows what the bible is no matter what their religion is or even if they don't have one. The Bible tells so many stories that everyone is familiar with and knows when it is being alluded to. The first allusion that came to my mind was the Scarlet Letter because we read it last year. The main character Hester Pryne is an allusion to Eve because they both give in to something they weren't supposed to. They both gave into their temptations and suffered the consequences for their actions.
ReplyDeleteThe Bible is alluded often because it has so much meaning and power to it. People who believe in God read it to figure out more about their faith. As the author said other authors read phrases out of the Bible so that they can include it in their story. The authors want you to recognize the allusion so that you can understand the story better. I also read the Jodi Piccoult book "Keeping Faith". The little girl was able to save people around her who were sick and dying. The main purpose of that book was her "saving" her mother.
ReplyDeleteI watched couples retreat today and the bible is alluded in it pretty much the whole movie. Number one the place that they go to is called Eden and then through out the movie it shows how these COUPLES are being corrupted by this beautiful island that almost seems perfect. I think the Bible is referenced so much because it was one of the first pieces of literature. It also has many stories that people can use to make their own.
ReplyDeleteThe Bible is most often referred to because of it being the becoming of humanity, and even if you aren't christian or don't believe in God you still know what the Bible is, so it's the most well known. After reading this book I realize how even in the book I just read "Such a Pretty Girl" I recognize now the allusion of how Meredith's father commits adultery as well as other things you'd like to call it which all ties in with the Bible.
ReplyDeleteThe Bible has been around for centuries. Since men began writing stories about their lives. In Ice Age 2 there are biblical allusions when they build a boat which looks suspiciously like an arc.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think we just watch those movies you said were supposed to be good :)
The Bible is used as a reference so often because it is very well known by the whole world, and allusions are easily spotted in literature and they help the reader understand what is going on in the story. In the movie The Matrix, the character Neo is a biblical allusion to Jesus. The character Morpheus thinks that he will be the One to save the people from the machines and help free more minds from the dream world.
ReplyDeleteI recently just watched The Book of Eli. It is based upon the Bible, just like many other movies or books. In the movie, Denzel Washington is a survivor of the "flash" and his mission is to get the book to the west. This refers to the Bible on the flash and the possible outcome of it all. The Bible is a common reference because it has so many good life lessons and events to relate to. Plus everyone knows the Bible.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the Bible is so often referenced because everyone, no matter what religious beliefs, knows what the bible is and what it says. One biblical allusion I can think of is in the book I just recently read, Liar. The girl, named Micah, is a compulsive liar and ends up being shunned by everyone in the school she goes to. In the bible, Ananias and Sapphira lied about how much they sold their land for, and were severely punished.
ReplyDeleteI believe the Bible is referred to so often because it is what I would consider the only real truth we know in this life. The Bible is also so well known that regardless of who is reading the allusion, believers or non believers, they would still know what the author wad referring to because the book is so well known. In many poems and literature today it is easy to find biblical allusions. One example is Simba in the Lion King when he returned to the pride land to save his people. Jesus acted in the same way when he died on the cross to save his people.
ReplyDeleteThe Bible is referenced not just because it is known by the world but also because it has very good lessons and morals in it that people can relate to. This chapter relates to the previous chapters about literature being one big book, lots of authors allude to the bible. In The Lord of the Ring J.R.R Tolkien alludes to Jesus and his disciples in the form of Frodo forming the fellowship and the companions following him across the land.
ReplyDeleteBy the way Angels and Demons is the best :D
The Bible is alluded so often because it is so well known. No matter if you have never been to church or don't even have a religion, you at least know what the Bible is. One of the works that stands out to me that the bible was alluded in was Evan Almighty. It was, I think, overly allusive (dk if thats a word) to the Bible, but thats how everyone understood it. Evan built the arc by hand, just like Noah, had two of every kind of animal on the boat, got all the people to get on the boat with him to save them, and even rode the boat through the town in the flood.
ReplyDeleteA book I read House by Ted Dekker and Frank Perretti is about a couple who gets lost on their way to marriage counseling and in the end is saved by a little girl in a white dress, a huge allusion to the bible, of course the authors are Christian but still it counts. The Bible is alluded to so often because of it's content, there is something in the Bible for every situation in life. There is nothing that happens in life that hasn't happened to one or more biblical characters.
ReplyDeleteThe Bible is alluded so often because of its nature. think about this ! anything you do moraly wrong the bible talks about the right way to live life. so in any story you can plainly relate when people mess up you know they shouldn't have done that. lots of the stories are beautiful so it makes since that they can be rewritten like in The lion The witch and the wardrobe. Aslion is like jesus in the fact he sacrifices him self to save narnia only to return form the grave
ReplyDeleteI think that the Bible is referred to so much throughout literature because, like a lot of others have said, it contains so power in its texts, and it has many great stories and lessons to be learned from reading it, and i think this pertains to people of all faiths, not just Christians or Christianity.
ReplyDeleteOne allusion that always comes to my mind is in Star Wars (yes thats right, Star Wars). When Darth Vader confronts Luke and trys to get him to join the dark side, this is an obvious allusion to when Satan tempted Jesus in the desert.
The Bible is referenced so often because it is so famous and everyone knows what the Bible is. It is full of stories that may seem far fetched but really relate to everyone on some level or another. The first thing that comes to mind when I think of a biblical allusion is, like nicole said, the short story we read last year. When the young boy steals a pie from a store he goes home and talks about seeing shadows of angels and sinning. When he hides under his house (cave) he talks about hearing the voice of God and once he came out into the light he felt brand new.
ReplyDeleteI believe the Bible is so popularly referenced is because: A, it's one of the most popular texts of all-time, and B, it's one of the oldest texts of all time. Taken in a religious aspect, a historic aspect, or even a fictional aspect, it's such a captivating book, filled from cover to cover with nothing but stories. So many works contain allusions from the bible, it's almost impossible for me to just hand-pick one out of the bunch. Thinking about it, what pops up in my mind is when we studied archetype in Mr. MacElrath's class. The archetype "sacrificial redeemer" is modeled precisely after Jesus Christ. The hero of the story sacrifices his life (or something of great importance) for the good of everyone. There are TONS of stories/movies that contain this archetype, many which have already been stated in the comments above this one.
ReplyDeleteThe Chronicles of Narnia are all about the bible. My church has done many studies on the book because it references the Bible so much. I have been to events were they even quote the C.S. Lewis. The Bible covers every topic, which is one reason why it can be used again and again. You can have stories about dying for your loved ones, or the birth of someone special... There are so many different stories you can reference. That is why I think the bible is used so often.
ReplyDeleteThe one i thought of right off the bat was the Chronicles of Narnia, but i see that other people have used this already. The bible is used often because it covers just about thing that you can think of, like love, forgiveness, and hosility. Using all of these is where the allusions begin, everyone experiences them in some way.
ReplyDeleteThe bible is alluded to so often because of the nature it works in. The bible has stories to pretty much show the nature of humanity. One of the movies i've seen that have many biblical references was the (yet again) The lord of the rings. The book has so many references teeming out of the pages. Thanks to J.R.R Tolkien being a devoted catholic. But the strongest allusions was the war between gandalf and sauron. Just like the war in heaven where satan was expelled. Other allusions are included like the love between aragorn the main character and the woman he loved.
ReplyDeletedentify at least one biblical allusion. You can talk about poetry, short stories, novels, or even movies. Also, comment on why you think the Bible is referenced so often.
ReplyDeleteBiblical allusions are found everywhere! Examples of these can be found in every type of medium available to mankind. They are found in poetry, short stories, novels, and even movies. Some examples of these are the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and the play Twelfth Night. I believe that the Bible is referenced so often because it was the first book printed by the printing press when it was invented in 1440 A.D. This led to the spreading of the book faster and greater distances around the world. It allowed more people to read it and form ideas off of it.
The first book that came to my mind when I thought of Biblical reference was the Chronicles of Narnia, which I see has already been used by some other students. I believe that the Bible is alluded to a lot because it is a book full of stories that people are familiar with, even if they don't believe it as Christians do. There are so many different stories in the Bible that teach good morals and values, that it can be hard for an author not to allude to something biblical.
ReplyDeleteThe bible was from the very beginning, everyone trusts what it has to say because it is so old and it relates to so many situations in peoples lives. A biblical allusion I thought of was The Book of Eli. The whole movie is based on how people want the original bible in their hands because it is such a popular text.
ReplyDeleteI think the BIble is referenced to so much is because no matter who you are, or where you come from if you live in any remote city you have heard of the Bible. They say it is the still one of the top selling books.
ReplyDeletein a story we read last year in mr mcelraths, this guy steals a pie and he feels guilty about it and there was a squirel on the tree that looked like it was getting crucified. basically the story was about him having a guilty concious. I think authors use the Bible because people know what it is and it has deep meanings to it
ReplyDeleteOne story in which the Bible is alluded...
ReplyDeleteAlright, if you've ever read Terry Goodkind's books or seen the tv show, Legend of the Seeker, you know about Richard. Richard is The Seeker. As you could've likely guessed. He's the Chosen One. The whole idea of 'The Seeker' is that one boy will be born, to save the people of the lands from a great, dark force. Now in some episodes, Richard actually guides a group of people (in one episodes, some gypsy hippies that won't fight back when they're being attacked) to safety. Moses/Jesus, basically. Except he kills people with an awesome sword that gives him the power of all the previous seekers, but that's beside the point. Point is, Richard is the Chosen One. As is Buffy. The Vampire Slayer. "Unto each generation a slayer was born." Yeah, I have that line memorized. I own the box set. It's in the credits of the first season and a half. At one point, Buffy also plays the sacrifical lamb. She died so a really big, bad god wouldn't kill everyone.
I think the bible is so common and relevant because everyone can relate to one story or another. There's struggle, darkness, temptation, evil, cheating, blood, gore, all of it. There's love, forgiveness, kindness, selflessness. Pretty much everything if not everything can be found. So the bible, it sticks around. Not to mention a couple million Christians worldwide.
