How to Read Lit Ch. 4

Wow--so the sonnet is the only poetic form we need to know? I wish he were the one writing the AP exam! However, I have to agree to a certain extent, it is probably the most common type of poem we study.Other than his explanantion of the types of sonnets and his remarks that Shakespearean sonnets are divided into 2 parts (the first two quatrains and the final quatrain/couplet)--with which I totally disagree--I thought he made a lot of sense.

Before you try to pick apart a poem, you should read just to get the point, the enjoyment. (I know--many of you don't enjoy them!)Also, there can be quite a bit of meaning in only fourteen lines. I loved how he mentioned that short poems must take far more time to write than longer ones, because everything has to be perfect. How true that must be.

OK, so for your response--tell me what you thought about the sonnet included in this chapter or what you thought about Foster's (the author) explanation for what's important in poetry. Your response should be 50 words. (EXACTLY)

  1. It took me a little while to figure out what the sonnet was saying, but after i got it i really began to like it. Also i do agree with what Foster says about the important things in poetry, such as having two main sentences that express the main idea.

  2. I really enjoyed the sonnet. I took it as two people meeting, falling in love but some unknown force pulling them apart. It is just like Romeo and Juliet I think. The force pulling them apart in R&J is the simple fact that they are supposed to hate one another. Yet they fall in love. There hearts where joined, and ah were parted so.

  3. I still dont really get what the sonnet it trying to say. From all I can tell its about a guy and a girl are in love but for some reason they cant be in love. I do notice the geometric form that the author was talking about in the book before the sonnet, like it having two sentences and the periods being in a certain place.

  4. I didn't really like this chapter, mainly because I had to keep re-reading sentences to understand it. But one thing i did catch was where he said that anyone reading poetry should just read it first without looking for what type of poem it is or the rhyme scheme. This way you will have an opportunity to get the true meaning out of the poem without it being covered up by witty rhymes.

  5. This chapter wasn't my favorite. I kept re-reading sentences because I wasn't fully understanding them. On the sonnet, my main thought was two people in love, but something was holding them back or not allowing them to be together. One thing i did understand was the use of sentences in a poem.

  6. The sonnet was very good. I believe it was about a couple that had fallen in love, but for some reason, couldn't possibly be together. They longed to be together peacefully, but when they think they will finally be joined together, a ripple forms in their lives, and prevents it.

  7. I really like the sonnet in the book, It took me a while to fully understand like it did for Jon, but once I understood it, it clicked in my mind that tit was about love. I also agree with what Foster says about sentence structure. For me, a poems easier to understand if its set up a specific way.

  8. I didn't understand the sonnet at first, but after it was explained I did. A man and women were in love but they could never be in love. I think this because they would be able to be in love if they could look at each other instead of their reflections.

  9. I didn't fully understand it, but from reading it I got that it was mainly about two people that fell in love, and for some reason couldn't or weren't supposed to be together. I agree with Foster and that it's what the sentences say not how long the poem is.

  10. I had a very hard time understanding this chapter to be honest. But the one part of this chapter that hits me is the part where he talks about there is only 2 periods in the poem. I remember Mr. Macelrath telling us about how poems can be long but may only have a couple of periods. And those two periods are a big part of making the poem what it is

  11. I really liked it. To me, it was just about young love and how they were scared to take chances and actually let one another in. This reminded me of the Sugarland song Want To. It's about the exact same thing. And now i understand short poems take more thought.

  12. This chapter sucked, I hate poems and I had to reread it just to understand some of it. I understood a little of the first sonnet when I reread it, and then I understood it more when it was explained.

  13. The sonnet in this chapter I loved! yes, It was confusing the first time i read it but second time I began to understand what the poem was saying. I thought the sonnet was about two people who were in love, and were soul mates but they couldn't be together.

  14. I liked the sonnet featured in this chapter. It was quite intriguing. There were a couple parts i didn’t really understand at first, but the author’s explanation helped me to figure it out. It wasn’t the best poem i have read, but it was good. I believe that most of what the author explained on what is important in poetry is true. I can agree with it. But, i can’t say that about everything. There were a few things he mentioned that i didn’t agree with. I found that i had trouble with his terminology. I enjoy reading poems, but they are far from being my expertise. I know very little about them. That could be why i had a hard time agreeing with everything he said. I just lack the proper logic in that subject.

  15. I honestly didn't understand or like this chapter at all. Its was confusing! After looking over the poem again it mad much more sense, its about two people in love who can't be with each other. I like the story but I really don't like the sonnet format at all.

  16. This chapter went over my head a bit so i didn't really like it. The poems seems Two people desperately wanting something but for some reason they cant have it. be it love or money or fame. i did however notice the way it was written seemd to be in a specific order some what like a system

  17. What i noticed in this poem was that the author was trying to show how the two people wanted to be happy, but just couldn't be happy together now matter how hard they worked for it. I liked how the sonnet is put together, and how extensive the idea can be.

  18. I hated this chapter. I really don't like poems, but the ones i actually understand i really begin to like poetry. I pick and choose when i like it, i guess. I had to reread the poem about 4 times to actually understand it, but once i understood i really like the poem. I also agree with the author that short poems are really the most complex, because they have more meaning with them.

  19. I agree with the author that a long poem is way easier to write than the short poems are. Also I get the poem in this chapter, and i enjoyed it alot. The two people want to be with each other so badly, but something is standing in their way.

  20. I don't agree with the author here. I believe that as students we should be encouraged to look for different types of poetry. Sonnet my be the most common type of poem but it isn't the only important type. By learning different types of poetry we well be able to read and understand poetry better.

  21. I honestly hated this chapter. I dislike the idea of spending time focusing on the numbers of words and sentences. I hate the idea of having only 50 words to write this post. I mean that in a respectful way, though. The poem is about love that doesn’t work out.

  22. I did not particularly like this chapter, I did not understand it very well. I had to read the poem a few times to really understand that it was about two people in love but can't be together. I did like the sonnet formating. I liked how it was in a specific order so that it flowed smoothly.

  23. I thought the sonnet in this chapter was about love that cannot be. I wonder if theirs was a love that could never be expressed or they were lovers who once together were torn apart. Which is worse, to dream of what could have been, or dream of what was?
